Hi all, I’m completely new to the forums and to Tesla. I just put down a deposit for a Model 3 and am hoping for a long range AWD version sometime in 2018. I currently drive a Golf GTI but decided it was time to switch to electric.

I love the forums and hopefully can contribute to this community.

Welcome to forum and to an already long line of eager Model 3 reservation holders!! Look forward to your contribution.

Allow me though to manage your expectation a tad... As there are ~450-500k active reservations in T≡SLA books, if you 'just' put down your $1k, you are unlikely to get your Model 3 before 2019, sometime during 1-2Q would be my guess.
The projected ramp-up to 5k/week at Fremont by YE17 should yield cumulative production of 30-35k this year. Considering an avg. output of 30k/month during 2018 - which already suggests they succeed in reaching 10k/week by around mid-year... - could get us to a cumulative production of ~400k by YE18, in the 1st 18 months since the 7/9/17 launch and VIN 1.

Yet don't despair... the car will be worth the wait... and time flies... ;)
