Elon Musk says Tesla Model 3 will get auto-dimming high beams in future update

    Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently confirmed another upcoming feature for the Model 3 on Twitter, stating that the mass market electric car would have auto-dimming high beams after a future over-the-air software update.

    Musk’s confirmation of the feature was posted as a response to a tweet from Tesla enthusiast Jeffrey Wolff. According to Wolff, he was surprised that the Model 3 did not have auto-dimming headlights in its present state, prompting him to ask Musk if the feature would be available to the car in the near future. It did not take long before Musk acknowledged the request, posting a simple “Yes” as a response.



    Automatic high beams are standard on the Model S and X. As could be seen in the owner’s manual of the flagship sedan and SUV, the headlight setting, which would be accessed from the Controls menu, enables the electric car to adjust the intensity of its headlights depending on the vehicle’s surroundings. According to the owner’s manual for the Model S, the Auto High Beam feature is activated when light from oncoming traffic is detected in front of the vehicle. The high beams would turn back on when the light source is no longer detected.

    Inasmuch as the feature is useful, however, Tesla has opted to not roll out Auto High Beam for the Model 3, with the owner’s manual for the compact electric car not including references to the function. If Elon Musk’s response to Wolff’s recent Twitter request is an indication, however, it would likely be only a matter of time before Auto High Beam headlights would be standard for all of Tesla’s offerings.

    Advanced headlight features such as automatic high beams represent a valuable addition to safety in the automobile industry. According to a HowStuffWorks report, a study conducted by the US Department of Transportation concluded that American drivers manually use high beams less than 25 percent of the time, regardless of whether they are driving in areas that justify their use. The reason behind this? Many drivers believe that they might end up blinding oncoming traffic if they forget to manually toggle their headlight setting.

    Unfortunately for drivers, high beams are invaluable in improving visibility at night. Thus, the US drivers’ hesitation in using high beams ironically ends up increasing their risks of meeting an accident. As noted in a blog post from the Law Offices of Michael Pines in San Diego, CA, 40 percent of highway accidents happen at night despite roads having 60 percent less traffic. With this in mind, features such as Tesla’s Auto High Beam, which are standard in the Model S and X, are incredibly useful in increasing drivers’ safety.

    As we noted in a previous report, Tesla recently rolled out update 2018.10.1 to the Model 3, which introduced heated rear seat functionality to the mass market compact electric sedan. The Model 3’s v8.1 (2018.10.1 5e8433d) update also included changes to how the car is unlocked, as well as adjustments to the Automatic Emergency Braking settings of the vehicle. The OTA update also introduced the capability to rearrange the icons on the Model 3’s 15-inch center touchscreen.

    Good article, Simon. However...
    I don't think this is completely accurate. According to the text in Tesla's update, it sounds like TESLA moved some of the icons around, putting the Media and Phone icons on the left. That's very different than giving owners the ability to rearrange or customize the icons. Just an FYI...

    @Not_Mandatory Thanks for the clarification! That was an error on my part (admittedly, partly caused by my personal bias of wishing for the feature:D). Needless to say, the article has been revised as necessary. ;) Thanks again!

    I've had my auto dimming high beams disabled on my ms 90d for over 2 years...

    Reason?

    They dim for anything remotely resembling an oncoming vehicle's headlamps...

    Do you ever stop to think how many homes have 2 lamp posts at the driveway end?

    Well.. with auto dimming high beams.. you can now count almost every one because your lamps will dim automatically on every dark road nearly every time the system encounters them..

    VERY ANNOYING

    DISABLED

    NOW CONTROLLED BY A SMART HUMAN NOT A DUMB AUTO SYSTEM

    THAN KS TESLA for giving me an option to disable vehicle functions that I feel are annoying and dangerous to me or my passengers.

    Losing your high beams at 60 mph on a dark country road at every dual lamppost lit driveway one encounters is dangerous.. why does a vehicle operator use their high beams to begin with?

    Another case of be careful what you wish for..

    This type auto dimming lights system is fraught with short comings and those are not solely limited to TESLA ' s system ..

    But you don't have to believe me...

    I'm glad I didn't pay an additional $2500 for this auto system that is as lacking in practical functionality as the AP 1.0 system .

    @simonalvarez0987 - I see your exchange with @Not_Mandatory below about the very last sentence of this post - \"The OTA update also introduced the capability to rearrange the icons on the Model 3’s 15-inch center touchscreen.\" but it still seems to be incorrect. I note there is another posting that deals with the update this sentence is referring to which is correct. Perhaps that other posting was changed, but not this one?

    I\'m hoping for an update on the auto high beams now, fairly unusable. Turns on and off constantly with reflections from street signs... At least OTA updates can fix it all!!

    OTA updates CAN'T fix it all.

    Don't be fooled by this BS.. If the system is not technically correct.. it may not be possible to fix at all.

    OTA updates have a.so been known to upset other stuff working just fine.. requiring EVEN more OTA updates..

    I waited several updates before my equalizer controls.. which were NEVER a problem prior.. stopped mysteriously ALL going to +7 totally on their own..

    Yup.. every time I got in.. plus 7 straight across all 7 bands...

    YOU don't want to know how irritating that is.. And it can't be defeated.. just gotta reset EVERY time..

    That lasted for about 3 weeks. which this audiophile TESLA person fumed about for at least several minutes.. plus 3 emails to my ever patient shop contact..

    I could go on.. but I won't!

    I would state the biggest issue right now is still the adaptive wiper system.. it still makes me wish for regular intermittent wipers every time I use it.. hurky jerky.. almost never at the correct rate.. get that straight please.. I cant defeat or disable that either . But I sure would like to.
